Painting Our "History"

Many of you may know we are big supporters of Downey Doodle-icious. We host field trips for third grade elementary classes and we showcase some of the iconic places Don Lamkin painted his famous pieces. When I was six years old my parents moved to Downey because they wanted my sister and I to grow up with a better education and in a safe community.

Growing up, there was not much to do as a kid, other than play sports for Downey’s Junior Athletic Association (DJAA).  Working for Stay Gallery has shown me a different perspective for the place I call “Home”.

I always dreamed of making a difference through filmmaking but never imagined I could accomplish it in my own city. I have been able to teach the younger generation what makes Downey a great city.

Two Weeks ago, The Downey City Council approved Don Lamkin’s "Downey Doodle-icious" to be painted on the side of Porto’s Bakery parking lot, in Downtown Downey.  The 16 foot artwork will embrace the history, accomplishments, and future of our city. This will also give the future generation an avenue to create and leave their own footprint of the city they call home.

On November 25, 2014, Don Lamkin started the sketch process of his famous Downey Doodle-icious. That night, I had the opportunity to capture some of the moments of our team and local artists helping Mr. Lamkin. The project will take a month to finish, so make sure to check back for more of his progress.
