Team 5851 Striking Vikings was created in September 2015. Starting with only 1 mentor and 15 students, Striking Vikings within 6 months grew into a team of 33 students and gained enough community sponsors to kick start our season.
Though 2015-2016 FRC (First Robotics Competition) season was Striking Vikings first year in FRC (First Robotics Competition), Striking Vikings was still able to establish itself as a major STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) and volunteer proponent in our community. We mentored and helped start an all-female middle school VEX Team 495 that qualified in 3rd in its first regional competition. To inspire young students in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics), we reached out to 10 elementary schools in our community teaching basic robotics and engineering skills to the students. Not neglecting the general public of Downey, we provided 3 free multifaceted STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) outreach programs in conjunction with Downey’s art center, Stay Gallery, and science center, Columbia Memorial Space Center. Due to the success of our outreach, we were asked by Frank n’ Sons, a major collection hobby convention, and the Downey Symphony to help on integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) into their own organizations with our team as their core representative.
And recently in the Los Angeles Regional Competition our team won the "All Star Rookie Award" for being the best rookie team in all aspects including team leadership and robot performance. This award was a big win for our team since it automatically qualified our team for international FRC (First Robotics Competition) Championship Competition in St. Louis.
And so we are seeking donations for the Downey High School FRC (First Robotics Competition) Robotics Team 5851 to provide our 33 team members with the opportunity to travel to and compete in St. Louis, MO for the 2016 Championship Competition. Our team needs to raise $35,000 to support this goal. Unless we reach our funding goal, our whole team of 33 hardworking student members will not be able to all go.
We are trying to raise our target goal by April 8, 2016.
By supporting our team, you will be helping 33 students experience an international competitive atmosphere. And during the competition the students will be developing not only engineering and design skills, but will also be developing leadership, business, public speaking, coaching, and communication skills with other 600 teams from across the globe.
We know our target goal is a large especially for the span of time, but we believe our community and backers will find significance in our team cause and ultimately help reach our goal.
Thank you, go Vikes!
